Cross Country Ready For SWAC Championships Monday

CLINTON, Miss. - The Braves and Lady Braves will make the short trip to Clinton, Miss. for the fourth time this season on Monday as the Alcorn State University cross country teams compete in the 2017 SWAC Championships, held at Choctaw Trails.

The men's 8K is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start, with the women's 5K to follow at 10 a.m.

"I'm hoping to have a good meet tomorrow," said head coach Brian Johnson. "I know that we can run with every team that will be out there. I just want us to compete to the best of our abilities."

Alcorn wrapped the regular season at Choctaw on Oct. 14 as the teams competed in the Mississippi College Invitational. Junior Angelica Jacobs led the Lady Braves and turned in a season-best 19:52.79 in the 5K to place 20th overall. Senior Dynasty Williams recorded a season-best with a 21:20.53 (42nd) and junior YeKeshia Royal was right behind Williams at 21:37.14 (45th).

On the men's side, sophomore Tyreq Miles crossed the finish line in 30:39.19 to grab 43rd overall. Freshman Peterson Saint-Cyrin improved upon his 8K time with a 30:56.44 to finish 46th, and senior Jabari Thompson ran a 34:06.74 for 53rd.

"I think we are in good shape to finish in the top three spots," added Johnson. "The experience from running there three times this season will help us Monday."

The top men's and women's teams are crowned league champions, while the top 10 individuals in each race are named All-Conference. The winners of the men's and women's races will earn SWAC Runner of the Year honors.

The Grambling State men and Alabama State women are the defending champions.
