Defense outlasts offense in Spring Game, 24-13

Alcorn State, MSAlcorn State's spring game resulted in the defense dominating the offense by a score of 24-13.  After forcing a fumble and a sack, the defense created a touchdown off a fumble recovery.  Three plays later, the Tunnel Defense scored again as Zavier Johnson ran in a 35-yard interception for a touchdown.

Returning quarterback Darius Smith took the majority of the reps, while Freshman QB Brandon Vessell saw limited action in the fourth quarter.

The offense totaled 103 rushing yards with several turnovers. Kicker Ernesto Santillo provided the offense with points off field goals on two separate occasions.

The white team's lone touchdown came from Arnold Walker off a 1-yard run in.

The purple team closed out the game with an interception by Deion Roberson which scored a touchdown.

“Our defense was ahead of the offense during spring practice.  The offense had spurts however I was not satisfied with turnover ratio.  They (the offense) were able to put together a few drives to score. We will work to minimize turnovers on the ball and complete drives,” stated Coordinator of Football Operations/Defensive Line Coach Todd McDaniel.

The Braves will open the 2012 season against Grambling State in the Port City Classic on September 2, 2012 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
