ALCORN STATE, MS -- Alcorn State Braves head football coach Melvin Spears has named Grambling State graduate Vyron Brown as his offensive coordinator.
Brown's hiring brings the number to three of assistant coaches placed on his staff. The other two assistants already picked by Spears are defensive coordinator Michael Roach and wide receivers and tight ends coach Darius Matthews.
Brown comes to ASU from Alabama State wherein he was the running backs coach for two years. He was a member of the Hornet team that won the SWAC 2010 Eastern Division Crown.
He has served as offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Shaw University, guiding them to scoring 40.6 points per game during the 2008 season when they won the CIAA championship.
Brown was interim head coach at Southern Lab High in Baton Rouge in 2007, and from 2004 to 2006, he was employed at Grambling State, his alma mater, for Coach Spears.
Brown was also running backs coach at Grambling State while Spears was head coach there and played an integral part in GSU's team that went 11-1 in 2005, emerging as Co-Black National champs as well as SWAC champs.
He began his career as offensive coordinator at Carroll High, was a two-time captain and member of Tiger teams that won back-to-back National Black and SWAC championships.
The double major graduate, who is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, is the father of three sons, Vyron Jr., Isaiah, and Jeremiah.
“He was instrumental in our winning a championship at Grambling,” states Spears, “And he is very smart. He understands the offense as he ran it back then, knows how to make adjustments and relates greatly to the other coaches and players.”
“First of all, let me give honor to the Lord, the head of my life:” states Brown: “for giving me the honor to work with Coach Spears again. I played for him and coached with him and we won four SWAC championship games, only losing at Alabama State the past season. I look forward to being a mentor off the field as well as on it.”
