Alcorn State University was well represented in the Super Bowl with alum Donald Driver of the victorious Green Bay Packers Sunday over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Driver, who holds the record for pass receptions as a Packer, played for the Braves from 1996 thru 1998. He was well known at ASU for making spectacular catches in a crowd, due to his leaping abilities. He took this ability with him to the Packers, consistently producing year in and year out, and was rewarded Sunday with his Super Bowl ring!
Driver was also a great track star at ASU, winning both the SWAC indoor and outdoor track meets his senior season. He was recruited to attend Alcorn State by Mrs. Alicia Shields Gaston to run track.
After arriving and doing very well as track runner, Coach Alonzo Stevens of Vicksburg persuaded Driver to try out for football. The rest is history!
Although Driver did not play much in the game due to an early injury, his accomplishments during the season helped send the Packers to Dallas, Texas and the big win. The tears shed by Driver after the game showed how great he felt being there and being a part of the winning team!
Probably the biggest fan of Driver is new Alcorn State University President Dr. M. Christopher Brown who is very proud of the University and the SWAC being represented in the Super Bowl, especially with
the Packers emerging as winners.
Alcorn State alum Leslie Frazier, during the regular football season, became the first SWAC alum to become the head football coach of a National Football League team, the Minnesota Vikings.
The Alcorn State nation is proud of the achievements of both of these individuals who represented the university outstandingly.
