Lorman, Miss.-President Dr. M. Christopher Brown, II, several community members, and hundreds nationwide gathered together on the beautiful campus of Alcorn State University to commemorate “A Man of Justice.” Medgar Wiley Evers, a civil rights activist, was involved in several efforts to overturn segregation in the State of Mississippi. Today, the Alcorn family honored Evers for his courage and persistence in allowing blacks to be afforded the same opportunities to be proactive citizens in their neighborhoods.
Evers enrolled at Alcorn A&M College (now Alcorn State University) where he excelled in the classroom as well as athletics. As a student at Alcorn, he was a member of the debate team, played football and ran track, sang in the school choir, and was elected junior class president. To finish out his career at Alcorn, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1952.
The dedication ceremony featured famous celebrities including; his wife Myrlie Evers-Williams, keynote speaker Tavis Smiley, gospel recording artist Lady Tramaine Hawkins, and Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. WJTV 12 Anchor Erin Pickens, , Toyota Motor Managing Director Derrick Sims, Senator John Horhn, and Evers' brother Charles Evers were also in attendance for the dedication of Medgar Wiley Evers memorial. The luncheon featured WLBT 3 News Anchor Katina Rankin, performances by Grammy Award winning recording artists Take 6 and Lalah Hathaway, and a live feed of Andrew Young.
