Rewind Monday: Braves 30, Alabama State 49

This past Saturday, the Alcorn State Braves football team recorded their first SWAC loss of the season to Alabama State 49-30 at the New ASU Stadium. On paper, the Braves won the game but it was the costly turnovers that hurt the Braves early in the first half which gave the Hornets a golden opportunity to score points and open a huge lead. Below are some key facts that took place this weekend:
  • With the loss, the Braves are 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play which placed them in the third spot in the SWAC Eastern Division.
  • Senior Tavoris Doss returned a punt 96 yards for his first career punt return touchdown.
  • Sophomore wide receiver, Jarvis Turner, caught his first career passing touchdown for 44 yards. Turner accumulated 120 all-purpose yards for the game.
  • Junior linebacker Will Thomas recorded 10 tackles and one tackle for a loss on Saturday.
  • Sophomore quarterback John Gibbs completed 22 of 34 passes for a career-high 288 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Freshman kicker/punter Haiden McCraney booted a 72-yard punt (his longest career punt thus far) and averaged 42.7 yards per punt this past Saturday.
  • Junior wide receiver Tollette George caught eight passes for 81 yards to lead the Braves receiving core.
The Braves take on Warner University this weekend for Homecoming. Kickoff is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. Also tune in tonight to WPRL 91.7 FM Radio and listen to the Jay Hopson Show. You can email your questions to football@alcorn.edu or #CoachHopsonShow.
