Lady Braves Win on Opening Day, Arzaga Gets 1st Career Victory

Box Score Lorman, Miss. - Tons of excitement this afternoon as the Lady Braves softball team took the field for the first time in 2014. The Lady Braves were able to avoid a late scare in today's home opener defeating Kentucky State 5-4 at the ASU Softball Complex.

After freshman pitcher, Kendall James, struck out two in the early going, the Lady Braves got on the board quickly.

Jessie Gressley hit a single to score Adriana Gutierrez to go ahead 1-0.

Senior Chqueta Givens stepped to the plate next and singled in Rayven Riggs to give the Lady Braves a 2-0 lead.

Immediately after Givens single, sophomore sensastion Hannah Vesper hit a single to score Devon Ryan and Givens to increase the Lady Braves lead to 4-0.

The Lady Braves held Kentucky State to just one run in the top of the second inning but ended up striking again in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Ryan hit a single to score Gutierrez to push the Lady Braves lead to 5-1.

Kentucky State scored again in the top of the fourth and fifth inning to cut the Lady Braves lead to 5-3.

The Lady Thorobreds came knocking at the door again scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 5-4. But the Lady Braves defense prevailed in the top of the seventh inning leaving the Lady Thorobreds with the bases loaded with en route to their first victory of the season.

The Lady Braves return to action on Wednesday as they welcome LSU-Alexandria Lady Generals to the "Reservation." First pitch is set for 1:00 P.M.
