Track and Field Performs Well at Samford Invitational

Birmingham, AL - The Alcorn State men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the Samford Invitational this weekend at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Both teams had solid performances in several of the field and running events in preparation for the Indoor SWAC Championships which will be held in Birmingham on February 22-23.

On the men's side, Darryl Jones soared to another career-high with a jump of 49-05.00 in the triple jump and placed 5th in the competition.

Sophomore Mario Martinez ran a personal best of 9:40.15 in the 3000m dropping 20 seconds from his previous run of 10:00.00 last week in Houston.

Hurdlers Shantoni Holbrook and Jeremy Banks each advanced to the finals of the 60m hurdles. Both Holbrook and Banks each ran season best with times of 8.53 and 8.51, respectively.

For the women, senior Shala Johnson improved on her mark in the long jump with a jump of 17-09.50.

Redshirt freshman Jasmine Robinson placed 11th in the 60m dash with a time of 8.71 and ran a team best 25.46 in the 200m dash.

Transfer Tatiana David advanced to the finals for the second consecutive week in the 60m hurdles with a season best time of 8.91.

Both teams are back in action this Saturday at the McNeese Invitational in Lake Charles, La. before competing at the SWAC Championships the week after.
