Box Score 4 Longview, Texas - The Alcorn State Lady Braves softball team participated in the 2014 SWAC Softball Round-Up this weekend where the East division faced the West Division. The Lady Braves finished the round-up with a 2-3 record with wins over Southern and Prairie View.
Game 1: Lady Braves 6, Southern 5
The Lady Braves took a commanding 3-0 lead behind
Alexandria Harris' two RBI single and run scored in the first inning. Southern scored two runs in the fourth and in the top of the seventh inning scored two runs to take a 5-4 lead over the Lady Braves.
But the Lady Braves didn't give up when
Shivonne Marshall scored on a failed pickoff attempt by Southern. A few batters later, Adrianna Gutierrez hit an RBI single to score
Devon Ryan (the winning run) to defeat the Lady Jaguars.
Game 2: Arkansas-Pine Bluff 18, Lady Braves 15
In a high-scoring affair the Lady Braves managed a season-high 17 hits but failed to pick up the victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Lady Braves took a 10-4 lead into the third inning led by
Hannah Vesper's two-run homerun in the first inning and Jessie Gressley's three-run homerun in the second inning.
But the Lady Golden Lions racked up seven runs in the third inning to take a one-point 11-10 lead.
In the next inning, the Lady Golden Lions came up huge again with a four-run inning to increase their lead to 15-10.
Hannah Vesper brought life to Lady Braves in the top of the seventh inning when connected on a three-run homerun (2nd homerun of the game) to cut the Lady Golden Lions lead to 18-15. But Ryan's pop out ended the Lady Braves run.
Game 3: Texas Southern 7, Lady Braves 4
In the final game of day two, the Lady Braves faced the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern. After being down 1-0 through the first two inning, the Lady Braves scored four runs in the top of the third inning on a three-run homerun by
Alexandria Harris giving the Lady Braves a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Tigers answered the Lady Braves charge and scored four runs of their own in the bottom of the third to retake the lead 5-4.
The Lady Braves went scoreless the rest of the way and the Lady Tigers scored two more runs and the Lady Braves closed day two out 0-2.
Game 4: Lady Braves 10, Prairie View 9
On the final day of the SWAC Round-Up, the Lady Braves kicked off the day with an amazing comeback win over Prairie View.
The Lady Braves fell behind 6-0 in the first inning on a few base hits and a three-run homerun by the Lady Panthers.
But
Alexandria Harris went to work for the Lady Braves again hitting a four-run grand slam for her second homerun of the SWAC Round-Up to tie the game at 6-6.
The Lady Braves struck again in the third, fourth, and fifth inning to extend their lead to 10-6. The Lady Panthers scored three runs in the final inning but hit into a ground ball for the third out.
Game 5: Grambling 10, Lady Braves 4
The Lady Braves faced Grambling in the weekend finale in Longview, Texas.
Grambling jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked backed from there.
The Lady Braves cut into the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning but the Lady Tigers maintained their composure and continued to score runs in three of the next four innings.
Harris finished the weekend with a team-high 13 RBIs on five hits and batted .417. She also scored five runs and hit two homeruns to lead the Lady Braves.
