Lady Braves Softball Splits with Southeastern Louisiana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LORMAN - After a devastating SWAC East sweep at the hands of rival Mississippi Valley, the Lady Braves softball team was able to get back in the winning column splitting a two-game series with Southeastern Louisiana this afternoon at the Alcorn State Softball Complex.

Game 1:  Lady Braves 3, Southeastern La. 1

In game one, both teams were scoreless after the first inning but the Lady Braves went to work in the bottom of the second inning.  Jessee Gresley led off the bottom of the second inning with a single.  Junior Rayven Riggs and senior Breanna O'Leary each single immediately following Gresley. 

Hannah Vesper stepped to the plate and hit an RBI single scoring Gresley from third.  Riggs would score as well on an error by the Lady Lions giving the Lady Braves a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Braves extended their comfortable lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Devon Ryan hit an RBI triple to right center field scoring fellow freshman Adriana Gutierrez.

Southeastern La. would get on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning but the Lady Braves fielded the ball well to take game one.

Game 2:  Southeastern Louisiana 5, Alcorn State 4

Game two was scoreless until the third inning when the Lady Braves broke open a 3-0 lead led by Rayven Riggs.  Gutierrez led off with a single and advance to second on sacrifice squeeze by Chqueta Givens.  Eventually, Gutierrez would score on a few errors made by the Lady Lions. 

Jessee Gresley hit a single and Ryan doubled putting runners on a second and third.  Riggs hit a two-RBI double to left field to score Gresley and Ryan to give the Lady Braves a 3-0 lead.

A three-run inning by the Lady Lions tied the game in the top of the fifth and they would add on to that score in the top of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.

The Lady Braves tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh led by Alexandria Harris' triple.  Harris scored on the ensuing groundout by Ryan cutting the lead to 5-4.  The Lady Braves hit into a double play to end the game.

Riggs finished the day with a .714 batting average on seven at bats, five hits, two doubles, two RBIs, and one run scored to lead the Lady Braves.  Defensively, O'Leary accounted for 14 putouts followed by Givens with nine.

The Lady Braves return to action this weekend to face LSU-Alexandria.
