The 2014 football season captured tons of attention after the Braves posted a 9-3 record and was only one game away from solidifying a spot in the SWAC Championship game. But thoughout the entire season all eyes were on senior running back
Arnold Walker who needed over 1,000 yards to break Augusta Lee's all-time rushing yards record. Walker succeeded by rushing for a total of 1,191 yards and finished his career with 2,806 yards to break the record.
Walker has been through it all during his four years at Alcorn and has continued to maintain his composure and become the all-time rushing leader. He's been under three head coaches and three different offensive systems. He was injured during the 2010 season after only rushing for 80 yards.
This year was the best season of his career after helping the Braves to their first winning season since 2006 when the Braves went 6-5. He recorded seven 100-plus yard games including a career-high 156 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown in a 44-38 overtime victory over Southern. He scored a career-high 16 total touchdowns and 96 points to break the single season touchdown and most points scored in a single season record held by former running back Harry Brown. To top off his stellar season, he was named the 2014 SWAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year.
He broke the record on November 7th in a Thursday night game against Prairie View where he rushed for 130 yards on 26 carries and scored two touchdowns to help the Braves defeat the Panthers 50-35 in his final game in Spinks-Casem Stadium.
Hats off to Walker not only becoming the all-time rushing yards leader but also being mentioned as one of the greatest football players to play for Alcorn State University.
