Top 50 Greatest Football Players: No. 48, Jack Phillips

Sitting at the No. 48 spot is defensive back Jack Phillips from New Orleans, La.  Phillips, the first of "Deep Back University" to be mentioned in the top 50, was a hard-hitting defensive back who gained a little spotlight in the late 1980s.

In 1987, Phillips recorded 66 tackles and one sack which ranked him third on the team in tackles.  He also intercepted four passes and broke up eight passes to earn a spot on the All-SWAC 1st Team Defense.  The Braves finished 6-3 that year.

During his senior season in 1988 he racked up 74 tackles, three interceptions, and broke up eight passes.  For his performance, he was awarded All-SWAC 1st Team Defensive honors for the second consecutive time in his career.

Phillips was drafted in 1989 by the Kansas City Chiefs.
