Top 50 Greatest Football Players: No. 47, Frederick Sparks

Starting the week off at No. 47 spot in the Top 50 Greatest Football Players in Alcorn history is offensive tackle Frederick Sparks.  Sparks played for the Braves from 1976 to 1979.

During his four year career, he was known as a tenacious blocker for the Braves offensive line and was a valuable part of the Braves successful running game the years he played.

In 1976, Sparks was named to the 1st Team All-SWAC Offense and helped the Braves capture the 1976 SWAC Championship.  The Braves offense accumulated 2,455 yards on the season.

Sparks earned 1st Team All-SWAC honors for the second consecutive season in 1977 after helping the Braves increased their numbers from 1976 to 3,054 yards of total offense.

In his last two seasons as a Brave, Sparks help the Braves capture the 1979 SWAC Championship garnering All-SWAC 2nd Team honors and was named to the 1st Team NAIA All-District 27 and 30.  He was also named to the 1st Team Sheridian Broadcasting Company and a member of the Black All-Star Team in 1979.
