Top 50 Greates Football Players: No. 44, Harry Brown

Today's pick at No. 44 in the Top 50 Greatest Football Players in Alcorn history is Harry Brown, Jr. Brown played for the Braves from 1991-94 and earned the name "Uptown Brown" for his ability to get up the field as fast as anyone out of the backfield.

Brown got off to an amazing start his freshman season rushing for 436 yards on 90 carries and scored four touchdowns. He also caught 24 passes for 341 yards and scored four touchdowns and averaged 19.8 yards on kickoff return. His impressive freshman stats earned him the 1991 SWAC Newcomer of the Year award.

In 1992, Brown made history by scoring the first touchdown and four of the Braves five touchdowns on the opening day of Jack Spinks Stadium (now named Spinks-Casem Stadium) vs. defending SWAC champs Alabama State. Brown became the Braves individual all-time single season scoring leader in 1992 after recording 14 touchdowns (11 rushing and three passing) in only nine of the Braves 10 games. He rushed for 351 yards on 57 carries, caught 29 passes for 195 yards, and returned 15 kickoffs for an average of 22.8 yards per return. His performance in 1992 helped the Braves capture the SWAC Championship with a 7-0 conference record.

Slowed down by injuries in 1993, Brown managed to carry the ball 68 times for 329 yards and scored five touchdowns. He also caught two touchdowns in his junior season.

Brown was moved to defense in 1994 and registered 27 tackles, two sacks, and five quarterback hurries. On offense, he rushed for only 93 yards on 31 carries and caught four passes for 33 yards. He scored a total of two touchdowns during his senior season.

At the end of his career Brown had accumulated for 2,471 all-purpose yards and is the only Alcorn player to score over 10 rushing and 10 passing touchdowns (31 career touchdowns). His 21-year scoring record was broken this past seasons' leading rusher Arnold Walker. Despite the injuries in his last two seasons, he still became one of the most lethal running backs in the SWAC and Alcorn history.
