To kick off the weekend, we take you back to the late 60's in the Top 50 Greatest Football Players in Alcorn history with wide receiver Oscar Martin. Martin played for the Braves from 1966-1969 and was one of the most skilled receivers to ever play under Coach Marino Casem.
Martin had amazing hands and also had the ability to break away from his defenders. His playmaking skills and speed along with his accolades places him at the No. 42 spot in the top 50.
In 1967, Martin reeled in 17 catches for 298 yards and scored five touchdowns. He also recorded one touchdown that season.
His performance during the 1968 season helped the Braves to their first ever SWAC and Black College National Championship title. He led the team in catches (39), receiving yards (723), and scored a total of 10 touchdowns (9 receiving, 1 rushing) for a team-leading 60 points. Martin earned 1st Team All-SWAC and NAIA All-American honors.
In his senior season for the Braves, Martin caught 33 passes for 557 and yards and scored nine touchdowns to tie his single season career-high. He garnered 1st Team All-SWAC honors for the second consecutive season. With the help of Martin, the Braves posted an 8-0-1 undefeated record and captured the 1969 SWAC and Black College National Championship for the second straight year.
Martin finished his career with 1,573 receiving yards, 97 catches and was the first player to record over 20 receiving touchdowns in a career (23). He No. 18 jersey is one of the three jerseys in Alcorn football history that is retired.
