Top 50 Greatest Football Players: No. 40, Tony Gibbs

Local product, Tony Gibbs, enters today as the no. 40 player in the Top 50 Greatest Football Players in Alcorn history.  Gibbs is a native of Bude, Miss. and played for the Braves from 1977 to 1980 as a defensive end and linebacker.

Gibbs sophomore year in 1978 was the start of many accolades to come.  Gibbs recorded 67 tackles and recorded seven sacks. He also intercepted two passes and was named to the All-SWAC Honorable Mention team.

In 1979 Gibbs posted 110 tackles, 14 sacks, and three fumble recoveries for a Braves defense who only gave up 10.3 points a game en route to a 8-2 overall record.  Gibbs also broke up three passes, intercepted two passes, and blocked one punt to help the Braves capture the 1979 SWAC Championship with a 5-1 record.  He earned 1st Team All-SWAC Defensive honors for his outstanding performance.

Gibbs recorded over 100 tackles for the second consecutive season in his final season as a Brave in 1980.  He posted 108 tackles and six sacks.  Once again he intercepted two passes, deflected two passes and recovered two fumbles.  He was named to the 1980 All-SWAC Honorable Mention team.

In Gibbs four year career he totaled over 300 tackles, intercepted six passes and recorded 27 sacks.  Gibbs is truly one of the best players to come through Alcorn State.
