At the no. 39 pick in the Top 50 Greatest Football Players in Alcorn football history is returner Lonnie Teagle. Teagle, a native of Houston, Texas, became a primetime returner at Alcorn State between the years of 2001 to 2004. Despite not scoring a single touchdown on returns, he still managed to give the Braves great field position each game.
Standing only at 5-4, Teagle earned the job as the kickoff and punt return specialist his freshman season in 2001. He returned 41 kickoffs for 721 yards and averaged 17.7 yards per return. In the punt return category, he returned 27 punts for 315 yards and averaged 11.7 yards per return. He totaled 1,106 all-purpose yards for the season.
In 2002, Teagle missed part of the season due to a hamstring injury but still managed to finished the season with a total of 677 al-purpose yards (415 kickoff & 262 punt return yards). He finished 12th in the nation in punt return average (13.7 yards per return)
Teagle's junior season turned out to be his best season yet. Teagle returned 52 kickoffs for 1,085 yards and averaged 20.9 yards per return. He also returned 33 punts for a total of 327 yards. He accumulated 1,412 all-purpose yards.
During his final season as a Brave, Teagle returned 39 kickoffs for 613 yards and returned 28 punts for 342 yards. He finished the 2004 season ranked no. 13 in the FCS in punt returns averaging 12.2 yards per return.
He finished his career with 3,990 all-purpose yards and became Alcorn's all-time leader in most kickoff returns in a season (41) and most punt returns in a season (27). His longest kickoff return was for 67 yards while his longest punt return was for 54 yards.
