Top 50 Greatest Football Players: No. 33, Rayford Jenkins

Kicking off week three in the Top 50 Greatest Football Players in Alcorn history is linebacker, Rayford Jenkins.  Jenkins played for the Braves from 1966 to 1968 for the Braves and was an All-SWAC peformer during his four year term.  Not only could Jenkins tackle but he could make plays in the open field as well.

In 1968, Jenkins helped the Braves capture the 1968 SWAC and Black College National Championship.  He totaled over 80 tackles and intercepted five passes which earned him a spot on the All-SWAC 1st Team Defense.  Behind Jenkins, the Braves defense gave up 8.8 points a game and held seven of their 10 opponents under 10 points throughout the season.

During his senior season in 1969, Jenkins led the Braves in tackles recording over 90 tackles and once again intercepted five passes and garnered All-SWAC 1st Team Defensive honors.  Jenkins and the Braves won the SWAC and Black College National Championship for the second consecutive season.  He recorded nine sacks and 10 pass deflections.

Jenkins was the only linebacker to intercept over five passes in two straight years.  He was drafted in 1970 by the Kansas City Chiefs.
