The top 10 is finally here in the top 50 Greatest Football Players in Alcorn history and coming in at the no. 10 spot is All-American return specialist Goree White. Nicknamed the "Nightmare," White was the best returner to ever come through Alcorn State. He ran a 4.42 in the 40-yard dash and was very dangerous on kickoff and punt returns.
Goree went to work right away during his freshman season in 1993. White returned 16 punts for 164 yards and averaged 10.3 yards per return and scored one touchdown. He also returned 26 kickoffs for 602 yards and averaged 23.1 yards per return and scored one touchdown. He was tabbed as the 1993 SWAC Freshman of the Year and named to the All-SWAC 1st Team Offense. To go along with the SWAC honors, White was also the first freshman to be named a NCAA First Team All-American during that season.
In 1994, White helped the Braves capture a share of the SWAC title with an 8-3-1 record. White returned 20 punts for 253 yards, averaging 12.6 yards per return and scored two touchdowns. On kickoff returns, he averaged 18.6 yards per return on 30 returns and totaled 558 yards. He also caught nine passes for 162 yards, scored two receiving touchdowns and registered 13 tackles.
White's junior season in 1995, he led the Braves with a total of 988 all-purpose yards. He averaged 22.4 yards per return on kickoff and returned a 100-yard kickoff for a touchdown. Not only did he put up good numbers as a returner, but his receiving stats improved as well reeling in 25 catches for 384 yards and scoring three touchdowns. He also rushed for 39 yards on four attempts and scored a touchdown. He was named to the All-SWAC 1st Team Offense at the conclusion of the 1995 season.
White's final season as a Brave, he averaged 20.7 yards per return on kickoffs for a total of 373 yards and averaged 15.6 yards per return on punt returns. He reeled in 23 catches for 310 yards and scored one touchdown on the receiving end. For the third time in his career he was named to the All-SWAC 1st Team Offense.
He finished his career with a total of 6,691 all-purpose yards and scored 12 touchdowns. He is the only player in Alcorn history to score a rushing and receiving touchdown and return a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown.
