A local product from Woodville, Miss. comes in today on this Friday's pick in the Top 50 Greatest Football Players in Alcorn history. Standout wide receiver Charlie Spiller played for the Braves from 2003 to 2006 and put together some impressive numbers during his four-year tenure.
In his first season in 2003, Spiller notched 20 receptions for 566 yards and scored seven touchdowns. He averaged 28.3 yards per catch and 51.5 yards per game. His best game was against Southern when he scored twice including the game-winning touchdown to earn the name "Charlie Spiller, The Jaguar Killer." He also caught two passes for 100 yards vs. Alabama A&M.
Spiller's sophomore season in 2004 was his best season in his career. Spiller caught a career-high 50 passes for another career-high 1,111 yards and scored nine touchdowns. He led the SWAC in receiving yards per game 101.0 and was named to the All-SWAC 1st Team Offense. He was also named to the SBN Black College All-American team and earned Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Region honors. Spiller recorded four 100-plus receiving yard games and caught a career-high eight passes for 223 yards and scored two touchdowns vs. Alabama A&M.
During his junior season, Spiller became the first player in Alcorn history to earn All-SWAC honors as a wide receiver and a return specialist in the same season. He led the SWAC in all-purpose yards totaling 1,554 yards and scored seven total touchdowns. He caught 38 passes for 794 yards and scored four touchdowns and also returned 28 kickoffs for a total of 760 yards and scored two touchdowns. His best game that season was against Mississippi Valley State when he returned two 100-yard kickoffs for touchdowns and caught five passes for 163 yards totaling of 363 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns for the game. Spiller averaged 27.8 yards per return and finished ranked 8th in kickoff return average in the FCS.
Spiller's final season as Brave in 2006 was even more compelling when he broke the all-time receiving yards record. He recorded 22 catches for 431 yards and scored three touchdowns (three receiving and one rushing). He averaged 21.4 yards per return and was named to the All-SWAC 2nd Team offense.
Spiller is the all-time leader in receiving yards with a total of 2,902 yards. He is 3rd in career receiving touchdowns (23) and 5th in receptions (130). He also has a total of 4,177 all-purpose yards and scored a total of 162 points in his four-year career.
