Top 50 Greatest Football Players: No. 4, Augusta Lee

Coming in at the no. 4 spot in the Top 50 Greatest Football Players in Alcorn history is running back Augusta Lee.  Lee played for the Braves from 1973 to 1976 but didn't really see any playing time until the 1974 season.

His first year of action of action in 1974, Lee carried the ball 161 times for a total of 858 yards and three touchdown.  He averaged 85.8 yards per game which helped the Braves capture SWAC and National Black College Championship with a 9-2 record.  He was named to the All-SWAC 1st Team Offense.

In 1975, he rushed for 560 yards on 146 carries and scored six touchdowns helping the Braves to 6-3-1 record.  He was named to the All-SWAC 1st Team Offense during that season.

Lee's senior season was even more electrifying than the previous two. Lee rushed for a career-high 925 yards on 245 carries and scored four touchdowns.  He became the first player to average over 100 yards per game (102.8 ypg).  He earned SWAC Player of the Year, 1st Team All-SWAC on offense, and NCAA and NAIA 1st team honors in 1976 guiding the Braves to another SWAC Championship.

Lee held the all-time career rushing record for 36 years until last season when Arnold Walker broke the record.  In his career, Lee rushed for 2,653 yards on 618 carries and won two SWAC Championships while earning All-SWAC 1st Team honors three consecutive years and NCAA and NAIA honors.
