Scouting Report: Braves vs. Southern

Saturday's game will be the first of two televised games for the Braves this season at Spinks-Casem Stadium.
 
This game marks the third of seven home games featured on the 2014 football schedule.
 
Alcorn is ranked no. 2 in the Sheridan Broadcast Network Black College Football polls.
 
The Braves are 2-0 at home this season with wins over Virginia University of Lynchburg (55-7) and Louisiana College (52-10).
 
Alcorn comes heads into Saturday's game with a 3-1 overall record and 1-0 in SWAC play after a 52-10 victory over in-state rival Mississippi Valley State last weekend.  Southern defeated Prairie View 34-24 in their first SWAC contest last weekend.
 
The Braves and Jaguars meet for the 63rd time in both of the schools history with the Braves leading the series 32-21.
 
In the last 10 meetings, the Braves and Jaguars are tied at 10-10.
 
The Braves are 5-5 vs. the Southern since the opening of Spinks-Casem Stadium in 1992.
 
Last season the Braves defeated the Jaguars 44-38 in overtime in Baton Rouge.
 
Head Coach Jay Hopson and Southern's Head Coach Dawson Odums meet for the third time in their coaching careers with Hopson leading the series 2-0.
 
Coach Hopson has a 5-0 record against schools from the State of Louisiana.  He is also 4-0 against SWAC foes Grambling and Southern in his two years at Alcorn.
 
Alcorn leads the SWAC in 12 categories; scoring offense  (44.8 ppg), scoring defense (13.0 ppg), total offense (472.2 ypg), total defense (256.0 ypg), rushing offense (295.0 ypg), rushing defense (82.0 ypg), pass defense efficiency (96.6 effic), PAT kicking (23-23, 100%), sacks by (18), sacks against (1), first downs (22.2 per game), red zone defense (55.6 pct).
 
Defensively, the Braves are tied for first in the FCS in the team sacks category (18).
 
Defensive back, Anthony Williams, Jr. leads the SWAC in punt returns averaging 22.6 yards per game.
