LORMAN - After clawing back from a 19 point deficit in the second half, the Alcorn State University Braves (5-3, 4-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) lost their second home game in a row to the Prairie View A&M University Panthers (6-2, 6-1) 40-34.
The Panthers struck first with a 20-yard touchdown run by Courtney Brown in the first quarter. After a 3-and-out by the Braves, a Haiden McCraney punt was blocked by Nick Brewer and returned for a 40-yard touchdown by FredrickAnderson to put the Panthers up 12-0. Later in the quarter, Brewer blocked his second punt, scooped it and returned it for a 30-yard touchdown to make the score 19-0. After a poor start by the Braves, backup quarterback LenorrisFootman put them on the board with a 36-yard touchdown scramble.
The Braves momentum spilled over into the second quarter when Footman rushed for a 52-yard touchdown run that cut the Panthers lead to five. The Panthers answered when Anderson rushed for a 7-yard touchdown, his second of the half, to give them a 26-14 lead. The Panthers' rushing attack remained strong with a 61-yard touchdown scamper by Johnta Hebert to increase their lead. Later in the quarter, De'Auntre Smiley punched in a 3-yard rushing touchdown to make the score 40-14.
The Braves started the third quarter with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Footman to Aaron Baker to soften the deficit. A few plays later, Baker scored again on an impressive 76-yard sprint that made the score 40-27.
In the fourth quarter, the Braves continued their comeback with a Footman 15-yard touchdown pass to Tollette George to cut the Panther lead to six. The Panthers controlled the clock in the final quarter and limited the Braves' chances of sealing the comeback win.
