As we celebrate Black History in the month of February, Alcorn State Athletics will reflect on the rich history of its' athletic program for the next 28 days. Several championship teams and outstanding individuals have contributed to the success of Alcorn State Athletics and we want to recognize them for their valiant efforts to make Alcorn State University Athletics what it is today.
Today, we take a look back at the 1979 men's basketball undefeated season. Under the guidance of legendary basketball coach, Davey L. Whitney, the 1979 men's basketball team posted a 27-0 regular season record while averaging 92.3 points per game.
During the 1979 season, the Braves won the SWAC Championship and earned a trip to the NIT (National Invitational Tournament). The Braves also became the first HBCU to win in the first round of the tournament by defeating Mississippi State 80-78 before falling to Indiana University 73-69.
Five players averaged in double figures in 1979 led by forward
Larry Smith who averaged a double-double (17.6 ppg & 13.7 rpg). James "PeeWee" Horton (14.2 ppg), Ronnie Smith (13.3 ppg), Alfredo Monroe (12.9 ppg) and Joe Jenkins (10.2 ppg) were the other four players averaging in double figures.
The talk of the 1979 undefeated season continues to be one of the greatest discussions in the history of Alcorn Athletics.
