Fred Kaiss was recently hired as the new offensive coordinator for the Alcorn State football team.
Kaiss spent the last four seasons as the offensive coordinator/running backs coach at Alabama State University.
In 2013 ASU averaged 36.8 points per game and 430.2 yards per game. The Hornets were the top rushing team in the conference averaging 231.5 yards per game, ranking 14
th in the nation among all Football Championship Series (FCS) teams.
In 1992, Kaiss served as the offensive coordinator, quarterback coach and receivers coach at Morgan State University. In 1993 he served as the running backs coach, recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator at Southern University. While at Southern, Kaiss and the Jaguars became the Black College National Champions, Heritage Bowl Champions and SWAC Champions in 1993 and 1995.
From 1997 to 1999, he served as special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach at Tennessee state University . During his short tenure in Nashville, the Tigers led the OVC in passing all three seasons. In 1998, the TSU offense was third in the nation in scoring with 39.1 points per game and fourth in total offense averaging 468 yards per game.
During his final two years at TSU, the Tigers compiled a record of 20-3, winning back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference Championships in 1998 and 1999, where they finished the regular season as the number one team in the NCAA Division 1-AA with a perfect 11-0 regular season record.
Kaiss spent five seasons, 2001 to 2006, at Hampton University where he guided the Pirates offense to top 25 rankings in scoring all five seasons. In 2004, Hampton finished second in the nation scoring 44.6 points per game. Kaiss was very instrumental in helping the Pirates win back to back National championships in 2004 and 2005, Kaiss also produce two 1,000-yard rushers for the first time in MEAC and school history in 2004 and then again in 2005.
Kaiss' kickoff return units led the nation with a better than 30-yard average, with All-American Jerome Mathis who set a I-AA record with five returns for touchdowns. Hampton also finished third in the country in punt return average in 2004 after finishing atop that category in 2002.
His coaching career began at Brooklyn High School in Brooklyn Park, MD in 1984, before moving in 1998 to Andover High School in Linthicum, MD. In 1990, Kaiss became head coach at Southwestern High School in Baltimore. Prior to his arrival, Southwestern was winless in three years. In his first season, Kaiss led his team to a 5-4 record, followed by a 7-3 performance a year later.
A Baltimore, Maryland native, Kaiss received his S.P.C. in trades and industry education from Maryland and a master's degree in health and physical education from LaSalle University.
Kaiss is married to the former Dorthey Hensler and they have two children, Alicea and Jonathan
