Softball: Lady Braves Lose Two to Nicholls State

LORMAN, Miss. - The Alcorn State softball team finally made their way back to "The Yard" for a home game since their last home outing on February 12th against Kentucky State.  But the Lady Braves weren't able to pick up any wins today as they fell to Nicholls State 5-3 and 15-8.

Game 1:  Nicholls State 5, Lady Braves 3
Alexandria Harris doubled to left field to score Sametria Collins to help the Lady Braves strike first in game one 1-0.

In the fourth inning, Nicholls State got on the board on a two RBI triple to go ahead 2-1.  The Lady Colonels scored again in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Collins stepped in and hit a RBI single up the middle to score Regina Warren and cut the lead to 3-2.

The Lady Colonels scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 5-2.

Harris led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple.  Next, Taylor Hughes single to left field to score Harris from third making the score 5-3.

The Lady Braves had one more chance to tie or win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Lady Colonels picked up a three up, three down to end the game.

Game 2:  Nicholls State 15, Lady Braves 8
A seven-run first inning by the Lady Colonels put the game somewhat out of reach for the Lady Braves but they did make an effort to come back.

After a RBI sacrifice fly by Taylor Hughes in the bottom of the first to get the Lady Braves on the board, the bats began to make some noise in the bottom of the third inning.

Hughes picked up two more RBIs in the third on a double scoring Harris and Adriana Gutierrez.  Jordenne Taylor singled to left field to score Hughes and the Lady Braves wrapped up the inning with three runs to cut the lead to 7-4.

The Lady Colonels scored two runs in the next inning but the Lady Braves came right behind them with two of their own.  Harris hit a double to left field to bring home Shivonne Marshall from third.  Hughes brought Harris home once again on a RBI single to left field and the Lady Braves left the inning down 9-6.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Colonels hit single after single to score six runs and take a commanding 15-6 lead.

With the game on the brink of ending in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Braves managed to stay alive.  Taylor hit a two-RBI double to right field to score Hughes and Rayven Riggs to cut the lead to 15-8.

With one more opportunity at the plate in the seventh inning, the Lady Braves were hoping to get something going but they went down in three consecutive batters.

Harris completed the evening with four hits including two doubles and a triple.  She also scored three runs and recorded two RBIs.  Taylor finished the day with five hits and four RBIs.  Hughes scored twice, recorded three hits and batted in four runners.

The Lady Braves are back at home this weekend beginning a three-game series on Friday against in-state rival Mississippi Valley State at 2 p.m.
