Alcorn State Women's Athletics bonded with the Vicksburg community during the Brave Life 5k Run/1 mile fun walk in downtown Vicksburg this past Saturday. Vicksburg community members as well as several Mississippians from across the state came out including special guest Alumnist and Olympian, Mildrette Netter-White of Grenada, MS. White motivated runners from start to finish and presented the top female and male winners with medals.
AmeriCorps, Guaranty Bank & Trust, Alcorn Vicksburg Warren County Alumni Chapter and women's athletic teams served as volunteers.
Hannah Hopson (daughter of Alcorn Head Football Coach
Jay Hopson) won the 1-mile fun run. Emily Williams and her daughter earned the gold and silver medals in the 5K run while Michelle Hopson (wife of Head Football Coach
Jay Hopson) won the bronze medal in the female division.
Eric Mason captured the gold medal in the 5K male division. Attilia Szasz and Briggs Hopson both won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
"Not only did we accomplish our mission of building relationships in the Vicksburg community, but today there were several Vicksburg community businesses and activist present to support our efforts," said Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator,
Dorianne Johnson. "Our female student-athletes had the opportunity to serve and promote Alcorn State Athletics and I am grateful and excited about the future of this event."
"Kudos to the Brave Life planning committee and Guaranty Bank & Trust Co. for their hard work as well as to our Athletic Director for having a mission on enhancing student-athlete wellness."
