Box Score 2 BEAUMONT, Texas -- The early-season ups and downs continued for Alcorn State Friday at the Cardinal Classic, blasting Northern Colorado 7-0 before falling to SWAC rival Texas Southern 6-2 in a non-conference contest. After the split, Alcorn is now 3-3 on the season.
Alcorn 7, Northern Colorado 0VANESSA SANDERS went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in to pace the offense while
ASHLEY BREAL (2-0) was phenominal in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out 11 in the win. Sanders' two-out blast to left center in the first got the Braves rolling. She started the fourth with a single and scored on a RBI double by
COURTENAY HOLT, who scored on a single by
MONTANA HOLYFIELD.
That was more than enough for Breal, who allowed just single hits in the third, fourth and fifth frames. She was in a bit of trouble in the fifth after allowing a one-out triple. but she struck out the next two hitters to end the scoring chance. She retired the last seven hitters she faced - four by strike out - to preserve the shutout.
Texas Southern 6, Alcorn 2ADRIANA GUTIERREZ went 2-for-3 and had the only RBI for Alcorn as the offense could not find a consistent groove against the Tigers. The defense struggled as well, committing four errors that led to three unearned runs and a loss for
JAZMIN CASTILLO, who also surrendered 13 hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Gutierrez drove in
SAMETRIA COLLINS in the first to give Alcorn an early lead. After TSU tied the game in the top of the second,
SHAMBERLYNN ALOP reached on a two-out error in the bottom of the inning to score Jordenna Taylor as Alcorn reclaimed the lead. But the wheels would fall off in the third as one error led to a 2-run frame for TSU before the Tigers scored three times with two outs in the fourth for the final score.
