Alcorn State University Defeats Rutgers University, 2-1

Early offense gave Alcorn State University a lead to work with as it defeated Rutgers University, 2-1, on opening day of the Ragin' Cajun Invitational.

Junior pitcher ASHLEY BREAL earned the win for the Lady Braves giving up just five hits while facing 24 batters.

Sophomore infielder TAYLOR HUGHES led the Lady Braves as she went 3-for-3. Junior infielder SHAMBERLYNN ALOP and junior outfielder ADRIANA GUTIERREZ recorded two hits each while junior outfielders VANESSA SANDERS and COURTENAY HOLT each had one hit, respectively.

The Lady Braves scored early as they posted their first run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Alcorn recorded three consecutive hits to load the bases. A groundout by junior infielder MONTANA HOLYFIELD sent the first run home to give the Lady Braves the early lead. A second run for the Lady Braves would come in the fourth inning to give them a 2-0 lead.

The Scarlet Knights recorded their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Alcorn returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. when they take on Rutgers University in day two of tournament play.
