LORMAN, Miss — The Alcorn State University softball team captured their first conference series as they defeated the Southern University Lady Jaguars, 5-1, Sunday afternoon.
This is the first series sweep since sweeping Alabama A&M University in April of 2013.
The Lady Braves struck first taking advantage of some errant throws to take a 1-0 lead on a TAYLOR HUGHES RBI double to centerfield. Alcorn State extended the lead in the bottom of the third on a MONTANA HOLYFIELD RBI double to right field. Alcorn added three more on a VANESSA SANDERS monster three-run homer over the centerfield wall to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Southern answered back with a run in the top of the fourth which is all Paige Breal needed as she held Southern to one run and three hits while striking out 10 Lady Jags.
Breal recorded 23 total strike outs over the three game series, allowed only one run in 14.1 innings of work earning a .049 era for the series. She held SU to a .085 batting average.
Hughes and ADRIANA GUTIERREZ recorded a .600 batting average over the three game series. Gutierrez, recorded six hits and four runs, and Hughes recorded six hits, five RBIs, three runs and two doubles. SERIES NOTABLES:
