PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Alcorn State notched their second conference win, defeating Prairie View A&M two games to one, Easter weekend in Prairie View, Texas.
GAME 1 : W | 9-2
Alcorn State University used a six run seventh inning to put away Prairie View A&M University, 9-2, for their fourth straight conference win.
Alcorn went into the seventh inning with a 3-2 lead after PVAMU cut it to one in the sixth inning, with the bases loaded the Lady Braves added one run on a TAYLOR HUGHES RBI single to left field. Lady Braves' Montana Holyfied hit a grand slam over the centerfield wall to put the game out of reach 8-2. Alcorn State added another run taking advantage of a Prairie View error to cap the six run inning. Ashley "Paige" Breal (7-7 overall, 4-0 SWAC) recorded another masterful performance in the circle pitching a complete game, striking out 10 Lady Panthers, allowing just five hits and two runs (one earned).
Designated player Holyfield recorded five RBIs including her grand slam homerun and sacrifice fly.
Alcorn State will be back in action Saturday, in double-header action to complete the three game conference series.
GAME 2 : L | 9-7The Lady Braves opened the flood gates in the top of the third inning taking advantage of a Prairie View error to take a 2-0 lead. Alcorn State added three more runs on a
TAYLOR HUGHES three-run homer over the centerfield wall to extend the lead to 5-0. Alcorn added one more run on a
VANESSA SANDERS homer to right field to extend the lead to 6-0.
Prairie View answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning with a fierce rally. PVAMU took advantage of five walks, an RBI double a forced pitching change, a three run double and fielding errors to push pass the Lady Brave 9-6.
Alcorn State was able to cut the lead to 9-7 on a
HANNAH VESPER RBI single to center field. The Lady Braves remained scoreless the remainder of the game dropping their first conference game of the season.
GAME 3: W | 7-4 The Lady Panthers struck first with a RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, but Alcorn answered right back with a RBI single to right field in the top of the second.
The Lady Braves continued to extend their lead with
COURTENAY HOLT's two run blast over the left center field wall for a 3-1 lead.
Alcorn State added two more runs in the fifth inning and in the sixth inning Sanders added her second home run of the series, a two run home run to record seven unanswered runs for the Lady Braves.
Prairie View started their rally with a two run home run over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the sixth inning but would come up short as they would fall 7-4.
Ashley Breal secured her eighth win of the season and her fifth straight conference win. Breal struck out four Lady Panthers for the game and a total of 14 batters in the series.
Courtaney Holt went 1-for-2, scored three times, recorded two RBIs and a home run. Katie Gore went 2-for-3 and recorded two RBIs.
The Lady Braves will be back in action Tuesday, March 29 when they travel to Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana.
