Student-Athlete Statement of Commitment
As a student-athlete at Alcorn State University, I am committed to the mission, vision, and goals of the University and of the Division of Athletics. As a part of that, I understand the vitality of utilizing and maximizing this two-fold experience (Academics and Athletics) to ensure that I successfully matriculate through and graduate from Alcorn State University. I will also ensure my growth and development into a responsible, mature, educated individual who becomes a successful agent of positive changes in my respective community. I understand that I must make a commitment to excellence in all of my endeavors: Classroom, on the court or field of play, and in the Community to enhance my personal goals, the goals of the University and Department of Athletics.

Philosophy:
Membership on an athletic team at Alcorn State University is considered a privilege. In order to maintain that membership, student-athletes are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship, honesty, integrity, and respect for others, as well as abide by all university policies, team rules, the rules and policies of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and the Southwestern Athletic Conference, in addition to state and federal laws.Â

Student-athletes, as representatives of the university, are among the most visible students on campus and in the community. Because of America's fascination with sports, and those who play, a unique platform exists to be a role model, mentor or spokesperson. The university, the athletic program, and the student-athlete all benefit from this exposure. However, this platform brings with it a set of privileges and responsibilities. Personal deportment of student-athletes, both on and off campus, becomes public knowledge.

To this end, the Division of Athletics has adopted a standard of ethical conduct and behavioral expectations for all athletes at Alcorn State University. A balanced student-athlete will be a responsible citizen who achieves academically and performs athletically. Violations of these standards are a significant event and calls for disciplinary action.
