Alcorn Earns Eight Podium Spots at McNeese State

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Alcorn State University track & field programs left their mark at the McNeese State Indoor Recreation Complex when they tallied eight top-three finishes and a gold medal on Friday.
 
The Lady Braves shined in the 600m as freshman Shaquanda Hill was crowned champion in the event and sophomore Angelica Jacobs earned runner-up honors. Hill stopped the timer at 1:40.68 to edge out her teammate who scored a 1:41.37.
 
After a first-place finish last week at LSU, freshman Anterious Brown followed it up with a second-place performance Friday in the 400m. Brown sped for a time of 51.11 which was a touch faster than his 51.14 last week.
 
Freshman Jessica Ransom also notched her second consecutive big outing, this time resulting in a second-place finish in the women's 200m. Ransom sprinted for a time of 25.77. It came after she placed fourth in the season-opener at LSU in the 400m with a 59.39. Ransom also finished second in her heat in the 55m with a 7.48, the fastest on the team.
 
Ransom did not compete in the women's 400m Friday, but freshman Tymesha Nabors did and she darted for a third-place time of 1:00.45. She was joined in the top-five by freshman Nathalya McMillion who clocked in at 1:02.97.
 
Junior Chinyere Mbonu earned a spot on the podium with a third-place leap in the women's long jump. Mbonu set a new personal-record as she landed at a mark of 5.18m which topped her previous best of 5.00m set last season.
 
Two more bronze medals were garnered by junior Dynasty Williams. She started it off in the women's mile after racing in at 5:43.21. It was more than 12 seconds faster than her 5:55.58 set last week at LSU. Williams finished her day with an 11:49.49 in the 3000m which crushed her time from last week of 12:29.22.
 
One spot away from the podium, senior Darien Hennington registered a fourth-place showing in the men's mile. Hennington scored a 4:35.37 which was a significant improvement from his 4:47.68 last week.
 
In women's throws, senior Samiria Martin placed fourth in the shot put with a 12.00m. It was a big improvement from her 10.93m last weekend. Martin also finished top-five in the weight throw with a toss of 14.71m.
 
On the men's side, senior Jordan Boyd made his first appearance of the year and tossed an 11.91m in the shot put and an 11.14m in the weight throw.
 
Alcorn will have next weekend off before traveling to Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday, Jan. 29 for the KSM Invitational. The 2017 SWAC Indoor Championships is slated for Feb. 16-17 in Birmingham, Alabama.
