Braves Drop Pair of Doubleheaders at Lamar, UL-Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. – Starting the season against stiff competition, the Alcorn State University men's tennis program fell to Lamar on Saturday 7-0 and 4-1, and to UL-Lafayette on Sunday 4-0 and 4-0.

Day one at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Complex was highlighted by a singles victory by Nuno Rocha. The sophomore breezed past Lamar's Brock Lauer at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-0.
 
At the top spot, junior Nikita Kostikov held his ground against reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year Michael Feucht. After dropping the first set 6-2, Kostikov grinded out a 7-6 victory in the second frame. Feucht was able to edge him out though in a third set tiebreaker 10-6.
 
The Cardinals are the defending Southland Conference champions and returned all six starters.
 
Day two at Cajun Courts was headlined by a doubles victory in the first of the doubleheader. At the No. 2 position, Rocha and junior Nischay Rawal took down Eriz Perez and Elio Lago 6-2.
 
Junior Kert Kilumets had a strong showing in singles, but neither of his matches finished. He was tied with Coleman Wahlborg 6-6 at No. 2 singles in the first match when play was halted. Kilumets then moved to No. 3 singles in the second match and split sets with Jamie Fraser 1-6, 6-4 when the Cajuns clinched.
 
ULL brought back five starters from a 17-11 squad including All-Sun Belt Conference selections Arthur Libaud and Perez.
 
The Braves will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Tulane on Tuesday for their make-up match. The doubleheader will begin at noon.
