Alcorn Falls in Doubleheader at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – Continuing its tough opening stretch to 2017, the Alcorn State University men's tennis program dropped a pair of matches at Tulane 6-0 and 7-0 on Tuesday at City Park Pepsi Center.
 
Tulane (2-0) advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season and reached the second round. The Green Wave ended the year ranked No. 31 in the country with a 16-9 record. They brought back five starters.
 
At No. 1 singles, Alcorn (0-6) junior Nikita Kostikov went up against the No. 54 ranked player in the country Constantin Schmitz but fell 6-1, 6-0. Junior Kert Kilumets hung around in the first set against Sebastion Rey at No. 2 singles but Rey ended on top 6-3, 6-1.
 
No doubles matches were played in the first match.
 
In the second match, Kilumets took over at the No. 1 set and battled Ewan Moore to a 6-3, 6-3 defeat. Junior Nischay Rawal tested Jonathan Star at No. 4 singles, but Star was able to grab a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
 
The matches were originally scheduled for Monday, Jan. 16 but were pushed back due to rain in the area.
 
The Braves will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi for the Southern Miss Tournament beginning Friday. The women's program will kick-off the 2017 season on Friday, Feb. 3 at the University of New Orleans at 1 p.m.
