BATON ROUGE –
Opening the 2017 season on a high note, the Alcorn State University track & field programs earned a pair of podium spots and numerous top-10 finishes at the LSU Purple Tiger meet on Friday at Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.

The day was highlighted by a championship run by freshman Anterious Brown who won the 400m in his first collegiate meet. He clocked in at 51.14 to beat out 25 registered competitors from six different heats. He was one of two Braves who shined in the event as senior Devaunte Richardson recorded a top-five finish with a score of 51.94.

The other podium spot was earned by the women's distance medley relay team who garnered runner-up honors. The team of freshmen Shaquanda Hill and Adajah Irving, sophomore Angelica Jacobs and junior Dynasty Williams raced in at 15:06.57 to finish only behind LSU's "A" squad.

Hill and Jacobs weren't done there as they notched a pair of top-10 finishes in the women's 600m. Hill clocked in at 1:40.82, while Jacobs was one spot behind at 1:41.44.

Senior Darryl Jones turned in a strong performance in the men's long jump as he posted a fourth-place showing out of 32 competitors. He leaped for a mark of 7.04m on his fifth of six jumps.

In the women's weight throw, senior Samiria Martin fired a 14.83m which was good for 12th-place. It neared her personal-record of 14.98m set last season at the SWAC Indoor Championships. Martin also competed in the shot put where she took 11th with a toss of 10.93m. Senior Dominique Edwards ended in ninth in the event with a hurl of 11.52m.

Another top-10 placement came in the men's mile as senior Darien Hennington stopped the timer at 4:47.68 to take eighth. It came close to his personal-record of 4:42.63 set at the 2016 SWAC Indoor Championships.

Two more top-10 finishes came in the men's 200m where junior LaMar Scott registered a 23.51 to place seventh and freshman Harold Horton a 23.82 to earn ninth.

"Today we did really well considering we just got back to campus a few days ago. We are much farther ahead of where we were last year at this time," said Alcorn head coach Brian Johnson who kicked off his second season at the helm.

Alcorn will be back in action next Friday when it competes at McNeese State. The 2017 SWAC Indoor Championships is slated for Feb. 16-17 in Birmingham, Alabama.
