LORMAN, Miss. – A lifelong golf instructor that's spent over 30 years teaching in the state of Mississippi,
Kent Smith was named the head men's and women's golf coach at Alcorn State University, announced by director of athletics
Derek Horne.
"I am honored to be the golf coach at Alcorn State University and am thankful for the opportunity. It is my life's passion to help young people better themselves through the game of golf," Smith said. "I want our student-athletes to have a positive experience through golf and to continue developing on and off the course."
Smith has been the head golf professional at Clear Creek Golf Club since March 2005. It is the same facility where the Braves and Lady Braves practice.
"We're really excited to have Coach Smith on campus. He's had the opportunity to watch our student-athletes play at Clear Creek over the years and is already familiar with Alcorn and golf in Mississippi," Horne said. "Coach Smith is both an accomplished golf instructor and player. His prior experiences will be invaluable when helping our student-athletes grow as golfers and successful individuals."
Smith has coached golf in Vicksburg over the last 27 years. Prior to his time at Clear Creek, he was the head golf professional at Vicksburg Country Club from 1990-2005. Smith ran a successful junior golf program at both Clear Creek and Vicksburg clubs.
Smith also has instructor experience at the Country Club of Jackson, the Canton Country Club and Valleybrook Golf and Country Club.
As a player, Smith was the 1998 PGA Gulf States Section Champion. He was a Mississippi Cup Team member and a 1995 Deposit Guaranty PGA tour event participant.
Smith graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1983 with a degree in marketing & sales. He has 25 years of experience as PGA Head Golf Professional.
