Alcorn Game Notes
HAMMOND, La. - After two dominant run-rule performances Thursday against Kentucky State University, the Alcorn State University softball squad will have a quick turnaround this weekend at the Lion Classic II hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University at North Oak Park.
Alcorn (2-0) will face the University of Buffalo and Morehead State University Friday and Middle Tennessee State University and Southeast Missouri State University Saturday.
In the doubleheader with the Thorobrettes, the Lady Braves hit .510 (26-51) as a team and clobbered 13 extra-base hits including six homers. Senior designated player Montana Holyfield and rising junior shortstop Bre Glenn powered two each. Senior first baseman Taylor Hughes and junior catcher Jessica Crum also belted one each.
Senior Jazmin Castillo threw a complete game in the first contest, scattering five hits while striking out four. Junior newcomer Madi Creed followed up that performance with a complete-game shutout, striking out seven and tossing just 79 pitches.
Coming off of a 17-37 (9-14 MAC) record in 2016, the Bulls return 14 players including first team All-MAC and NFCA All-Region honoree Savanna Norcio.
The Eagles are 2-2 this season, dropping a 1-0 contest to Saint Louis before besting South Carolina State and splitting two games against Kennesaw State at the Owls Tournament. Senior Karly Thompson is batting .444 with three doubles and junior Robyn Leighton has a team-high eight RBIs and two homers.
The Blue Raiders have started 4-1 for the first time since 1999. After falling 4-0 to Tennessee, MTSU rebounded by topping Tennessee Tech and Georgia Southern twice. Austyn Whaley earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors after an 8-for-14 weekend with four extra-base hits and eight RBIs.
The Redhawks are 3-0 this season, winning the Jackson State Tournament with run-rule victories over JSU, Jarvis Christian and Tennessee State. Consequently, Rachel Anderson earned OVC Co-Player of the Week honors, smacking six hits including two doubles, two triples and a homer. She scored six runs and drove in seven.
