Alcorn Takes Step Forward at SWAC Indoor Championships; Ransom Wins 400m

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Both improving their standing from last year, the Alcorn State University track & field program's closed out the 2017 SWAC Indoor Championships on Thursday and Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
 
The men finished eighth overall, while the women ended in ninth. It topped their results from last year where the men took ninth and the women 10th.
 
"I am super excited of the progress that we have made from last year to this year. I know that with a little more time we will be competing for the top spot and bringing Alcorn its first SWAC Championship in track & field," said second year head coach Brian Johnson.
 
Freshman Jessica Ransom highlighted the two days after being crowned champion in the 400m for the Lady Braves. On day one, she ran a 56.40 to qualify for the finals after finishing top-eight. On the second day, she won the event with a personal-record 56.06. It crushed her previous best of 58.17 set at the KSM Invite on Jan. 29.
 
The Braves were guided by senior Darryl Jones who scored points in three different events. He earned a spot on the podium with a third-place long jump of 7.16m. He followed it up with a fourth-place triple jump of 14.72m and a sixth-place pole vault of 3.65m. All three scores were season-bests.
 
Also on the podium, the women's distance medley relay team earned a bronze medal. The crew of junior Dynasty Williams, sophomore Angelica Jacobs and freshmen Tymesha Nabors and Shaquanda Hill clocked in at 13:50.99. It was a huge improvement from their 15:06.57 at LSU on Jan. 6.
 
Jacobs also scored in the 800m where she placed top-five. She ran a 2:21.76 in the prelims and a 2:21.88 in the finals.
 
In addition to Jacobs, Williams also earned points for the Lady Braves in two events. She ended in seventh in the 3000m with a season-best of 11:16.05. It shattered her previous best of 11:49.49 set at McNeese State on Jan. 13.
 
In women's throws, senior Samiria Martin registered a seventh-place shot put of 12.60m, while senior Dominique Edwards fired an eighth-place weight throw of 15.89m.
 
Alcorn garnered a pair of sixth-place jumps. For the men, freshman Darius Major leaped for a mark of 6.96m. For the women, freshman Shaniqua Knowles landed at a spot of 11.55m.
 
Freshman Kemar Cumberbatch reached the finals of the 60m. He started it off with a 6.88 in the prelims and then placed seventh in the finals after sprinting for a 6.94m.
 
The Braves rounded it out with a sixth-place showing in the men's 4x400m relay. The team of senior Devaunte Richardson, senior Marquis Prentiss, freshman Lane Ross and freshman Anterious Brown timed in at a season-best of 3:18.86. It topped their 3:20.49 at the KSM Invitational.
 
Alcorn will now turn its attention to the 2017 outdoor season which begins Saturday, March 11 at McNeese State.
