THIBODAUX, La. - The Alcorn State University softball program looks to build off of its performance at the Lion Classic II Wednesday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Nicholls State University at Nicholls Softball Complex.
Alcorn (3-3) faced off against Buffalo, Morehead State, Middle Tennessee and Southeast Missouri State at the event hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University.
The Lady Braves commenced the tournament with an impressive 12-3 victory over the Bulls, lifted by three-RBI performances from juniors Jessica Crum and Taylor Hughes. Junior newcomer Robin Harrison tossed a complete game in her first career start.
Alcorn held a 10-8 advantage over the Eagles after five innings before the opposition stormed back for nine runs in the final two innings to steal the win. Crum again produced three RBIs while sophomore third baseman Victoria Tyler tallied four.
Senior Vanessa Sanders pulled a two-run homer to left field against the Blue Raiders despite the squad falling 10-2.
In the final contest of the event, the Lady Braves were down 3-0 and rallied for two in the top of the seventh with two outs. Senior outfielder Courtenay Holt then hit a single to left that scored Hughes, but fellow senior Madison Chitwood was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run.
Crum concluded the weekend batting .600 (9-15) with a team-high 6 RBIs. Crum and Tyler are currently on five-game hitting streaks while senior second baseman Sametria Collins has reached base in all six games.
Alcorn's bats have produced a .376 average thus far and 40 percent (26-65) of its hits have gone for extra bases. Eight of those 26 knocks have left the park for homers.
Nicholls (9-2) freshman outfielder and leadoff hitter Samantha Mracich has reached base in 10 of 11 contests. She currently fronts the Colonels with a .459 batting average.
Nicholls' roster also features sophomore shortstop Amanda Gianelloni, the reigning Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, and three Preseason All-Southland Conference second teamers in pitcher Megan Landry, designated player Gretchen Morgan and utility player Veronica Villafranco.
