Lady Braves Sweep Mississippi College 9-0, Braves Drop Tight 6-3 Decision

CLINTON, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's tennis program turning in a perfect 9-0 result over Mississippi College, but the men's team fell 6-3 Wednesday at the MC Tennis Complex.
 
The Lady Braves (2-7) won all three doubles matches over MC (0-3) by the identical score of 6-2. They continued to assert themselves at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles where junior Natalia Parchowska, freshman Anastastia Vaganova and sophomore Marlene Maier did not drop a set.
 
At the top singles spot, sophomore Bianca Birkenstock pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 result over Brenna Keller. Freshman Daria Chemodanova posted a similar result at No. 2 singles where she also won the first and third sets comfortable 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. At the No. 3 position, sophomore Klavdija Bukovec split sets 5-7, 6-3 when all other matches were completed and then finished it off 10-7 in a third-set tiebreaker.
 
The Braves (2-10) went up against a tough MC (2-3) team that also beat Jackson State earlier this year.
 
Alcorn won at No. 3 doubles as senior Nischary Rawal and sophomore Nuno Rocha tallied a 6-3 final. The Braves lost at No. 2 doubles, and then were edged out at the top spot 7-5.
 
Rawal tacked on another win as he breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Alcorn's final victory came at the No. 2 position where junior Kert Kilumets stayed hot with a comeback 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 score.
 
Kilumets improved to 5-2 on the season at No. 2 singles.
 
The Braves and Lady Braves will now turn their attention to the SWAC Round-Up this weekend in Jackson, Mississippi. The Braves play their first of three matches against Mississippi Valley State at 5 p.m. Friday at the JSU Campus Courts. The Lady Braves will open against Southern at 2 p.m. Friday at Courthouse Racquet and Fitness.
