LORMAN, Miss. - The Alcorn State University softball squad is looking to avenge an earlier loss this season in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon against Southeast Missouri State University at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
Alcorn (3-5) had an impressive showing in Thibodaux, Louisiana, earlier this week when it dropped two close contests to Nicholls, a top-tier Southland Conference team.
Junior Robin Harrison and freshman Ambria Dorsey threw complete games against the Colonels. Senior second baseman Sametria Collins extended her reached-base streak to eight games as she secured two hits in game one and one in game two. She is also a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases.
Junior catcher Jessica Crum has a team-best .522 batting average followed by junior first baseman Taylor Hughes (.448) and senior outfielder Vanessa Sanders (.400). Hughes has the most hits at 13, and six of Sanders' 10 hits have gone for extra bases including a team-high five doubles.
These two teams met at the Lion Classic II on Feb. 19 where the Redhawks prevailed with a 3-2 victory. The Lady Braves were down 3-0 entering the seventh and scored two on a two-out rally before senior Madison Chitwood was thrown out at home plate on a Courtenay Holt single.
SEMO (6-2) is on a three-game winning streak with its most recent win coming against Alcorn. The Redhawks are spearheaded by freshman outfielder Rachel Anderson, who fronts the team in batting average (.522), home runs (2) and RBIs (8).
