Braves, Lady Braves Fall to JSU, Sweep AAMU

JACKSON, Miss. – The second day of the SWAC Round-Up saw the Alcorn State University men's and women's tennis programs both dropping close matches to Jackson State before rebounding to sweep Alabama A&M 4-0 Saturday at the JSU Campus Courts.
 
The Braves (4-11, 2-1 SWAC) saw junior Kert Kilumets win two more singles matches on the day at the No. 2 position. He improved his season record to 8-2 at that spot.
 
Alcorn was looking good against the Tigers after winning the doubles point. Kilumets and senior Nikita Kostikov cruised to a 6-1 win at the No. 1 slot. It came down to No. 3 doubles where sophomore Nuno Rocha and senior Nischay Rawal pulled out a 7-5 decision.
 
Though the Tigers responded in singles and won the No. 1, 3, 5 and 6 spots. Kilumets posted the lone singles win for Alcorn in a 6-0, 6-3 drubbing. Rawal had splits sets at No. 4 singles when play was halted.
 
The Braves bounced back against AAMU as the No. 1 and 3 doubles teams both notched 6-2 wins. Kilumets followed suite again with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.
 
Alcorn clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory from freshman Ivan Matas at No. 5 singles and a 6-1, 6-0 win from Rocha at the No. 6 position. Kostikov and Rawal were also up sets at No. 1 and 4 singles, respectively, when the Braves clinched.
 
The Lady Braves (4-9, 2-2 SWAC) were edged out 4-3 by the Lady Tigers. It came down to No. 4 singles where JSU claimed a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 result.
 
Alcorn fell behind after dropping the doubles point. The team of freshman Dario Chemodanova and junior Natalia Parchowska grabbed a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but the Lady Braves dropped the bottom two slots.
 
In singles, freshman Anastasia Vaganova quickly got Alcorn on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. On the next court over, sophomore Marlene Maier posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6. Alcorn's final win came in a three-setter as Chemodanova etched a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win.
 
Like the men, the Alcorn women came back strong against the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Braves won at No. 2 and 3 doubles and were also winning at the top spot.
 
In singles, sophomore Bianca Birkenstock breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1. Vagananova and Maier combined to drop just one game at No. 4 and 5 to quickly seal it.
 
The Braves will be back in action Friday when they travel to Nicholls State for a 2 p.m. start. The Lady Braves have off until next Sunday when they head to McNeese State for a 1 p.m. match.
