LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University softball squad fell 8-0 and 7-5 Saturday afternoon against Southeast Missouri State University at the Alcorn Softball Complex.
Game 1 – SEMO 8, Alcorn 0 (5 inn.)
Junior
Madi Creed threw 34 pitches in the first inning, resulting in three Redhawks runs after a two-run homer and RBI double.
The Lady Braves (3-7) best scoring opportunity came on a two-out rally in the bottom of the second when junior
Victoria Tyler and senior
Montana Holyfield hit back-to-back singles and senior
Adriana Gutierrez walked to load the bases. Unfortunately junior
Bre Glenn struck out to end the threat.
Alcorn was unable to put a runner in scoring position for the remainder of the contest as SEMO (8-2) added two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to force the eight-run rule after five.
Holyfield concluded the game with two of the team's four hits.
Creed would take the loss allowing seven runs (six earned) in 3.1 innings pitched. Junior
Robin Harrison tossed 1.2 innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits.
Game 2 – SEMO 7, Alcorn 5
Senior
Sametria Collins extended her reached base streak to 10 games on an eight-pitch walk in the bottom of the first. After advancing to third on a
Mariah Ortiz groundout, she scored on a single by junior
Taylor Hughes down the left-field line.
"[Sametria] is doing her job by getting on base," said Alcorn head coach
Josef Rankin. "She's done an outstanding job of getting on base all year."
Hughes then advanced to second on a wild pitch and was later plated by junior
Jessica Crum on a single through the left side.
The Redhawks would score three in the next half-inning on an RBI double and two-RBI single to take a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third, however, the Lady Braves would regain the advantage after scoring two runs.
Hughes reached on an error and Crum doubled to right which put runners on second and third. The two runners would advance one base on a wild pitch. Senior
Vanessa Sanders then hit a deep fly to center that plated Crum.
SEMO scratched three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to go back up 7-4.
Alcorn brought the tying run to the dish in the seventh. Collins commenced the frame with a single. She stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and was then brought home on a Hughes groundout to short.
Crum walked to bring up Sanders who flew out to center to end the game.
Crum went 3-for-3 with a career-high two doubles. This was her fourth three-hit performance of the season. She is batting .536 (15-28) through the first 10 games.
Freshman
Ambria Dorsey tossed two scoreless innings and allowed just two hits.
"We swung it better [in game two]. Ambria did a good job coming in and keeping it where it was. We are still learning. We are learning how small the margin of error is. When you make an error or allow two-out walks against good teams that are swinging, that will hurt you. We are learning and getting there. That's just part of the process. It's a little frustrating, but we're still building and figuring out how to win," said Rankin.
The Lady Braves return to action Thursday in a doubleheader against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
