MOBILE, Ala. - The Alcorn State University men's and women's golf squads concluded play at the Badger Invitational Tuesday on Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.
The men finished fifth out of 11 teams, cutting 12 strokes from a round-one 310 to a round-two 298. The team shot a final-round 301, aided by junior Daniel Racioppa's 1-over 73.
Racioppa was the Braves top individual finisher for the third consecutive tournament, placing in a three-way tie for ninth on a 7-over 223. He was followed by freshman Spencer Rhodes, whose second-round 72 marked the lowest 18-hole total for the Braves. Rhodes finished in a five-way tie for 18th on a 13-over 229.
Juniors Daniel Stamper, Jon Allen and Luther Thompson rounded out the fivesome with 23rd-, 25th- and 31st-place finishes, respectively.
"We win or we learn," said Alcorn head golf coach Danny Forshey. "This week has been a great learning experience for our men. We have identified areas that we need to improve on and will improve on those areas. I am looking forward to working hard to further improve our team."
The women ended the tournament in seventh place, but made an improvement in strokes in each round. Junior Quinn Meyer shot a 7-over 79 in the second round, the lowest 18-hole total by a Lady Brave this season. She was Alcorn's top female individual finisher in 19th place.
"Quinn showed the grit and determination it takes to play at a high level. I am very proud of her and the entire girls team. We are improving," said Forshey.
The two teams return to competitive play March 6-7 in an event hosted by SWAC foe Alabama State.
