Kilumets Picks Up Win for Alcorn at UNO

NEW ORLEANS – Junior Kert Kilumets registered a three-set victory for Alcorn State University tennis, but the men's program dropped a 6-1 decision and the women's team fell 7-0 to New Orleans on Friday at the University Tennis Center.
 
At No. 2 singles, Kilumets lost the first set 6-1 for the Braves (0-9) when he bounced back to pull out the second 6-3. As the last match still playing, Kilumets and UNO's Frederico Boscarino played a super-tiebreaker for the third which Kilumets won 10-6.
 
Junior Nikita Kostikov put up a fight at the No. 1 position as he pushed Jeffrey Hsu to a 6-1, 6-4 defeat.
 
In the season-opener for the Lady Braves (0-1), sophomore Bianca Birkenstock nearly pulled out a set at No. 3 singles but was edged in the second frame for a 6-0, 7-5 final. Birkenstock teamed with freshman Veronika Pytlikova at No. 3 doubles and were trailing just 4-2 when the match went unfinished.
 
Both Alcorn squads will be in action again Wednesday when they travel to Delta State for a 2 p.m. start.
