HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Alcorn State University softball team takes to the road again Thursday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Southern Miss at its softball complex.
Alcorn (3-7) dropped two games in its most recent doubleheader against Southeast Missouri State, 8-0 and 7-5. The Lady Braves again saw impressive performances from junior Robin Harrison and Ambria Dorsey, as the duo allowed just one earned run in 3.2 innings of work.
Junior catcher Jessica Crum, last week's SWAC Softball Hitter of the Week, notched her fourth three-hit outing of the season in game two. She has a team-high .536 (15-28) batting average, 12 RBIs, seven extra-base hits and five multiple-hit occurrences.
Senior second baseman Sametria Collins has reached base in all 10 games this season with at least one hit in nine contests. She is also 6-for-7 in stolen bases despite swiping just five all of last season.
Alcorn is outscoring its opponents 41-26 through the first three innings and 11-3 in the seventh. The Lady Braves are 2-0 this season when limiting opponents to two runs or less.
The Golden Eagles (9-7) were chosen to finish fifth in the preseason C-USA poll. They are spearheaded by senior third baseman Lauren Holifield, who ranks atop the squad in batting average (.340), home runs (3) and RBIs (9).
She was deemed C-USA's Newcomer of the Year last year and homered in Southern Miss' most recent game against No. 12 LSU.
