Alcorn Notches Solid Start to Outdoor Season at McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La. – In its first outdoor showing of the season, the Alcorn State University track & field programs competed in the Cowboy Relays on Saturday at the McNeese Track Complex.
 
Alcorn's combined score of 64 points between the men and women was second out of four between SWAC schools at the meet. It finished ahead of Texas Southern and Southern, but behind Grambling.
 
Senior Dominique Edwards registered the team's highest placement on the day with a silver medal in the discus. She tossed a 43.48m to lead Alcorn in throws. Edwards also fired a team-best 40.40m in the hammer to finish 12th.
 
Another podium spot was earned in the women's 1500m where sophomore Angelica Jacobs legged out a 4:59.18 to end in third. She won her heat by over 12 seconds. Also in women's distance, junior Dynasty Williams recorded a top-10 finish in the 3000m with a time of 11:21.94.
 
On the men's side, freshman Lane Ross turned in a big day in hurdles. He tallied a top-five showing in the 400m hurdles with a score of 55.96. He also placed seventh overall and second in his heat in the 110m hurdles after sprinting for a 15.74.
 
In women's hurdles, freshman Tymesha Nabors submitted a fourth-place time of 1:04.28. She also won her heat. Fellow freshman Candace Baity was third in her heat and 11th overall in the 100m hurdles with a score of 15.95.
 
Senior Shaniqua Knowles led the Lady Braves in jumps with an 11.24m in the triple jump which was good for eighth-place.
 
In men's sprints, freshman Kemar Cumberbatch etched Alcorn's fastest time with a 10.98 in the 100m for a top-15 score.
 
To end the day, the Lady Braves excelled in a pair of relays. The women's 4x200m team finished in second with a 1:41.88, and the 4x400 group ended in third with a 3:54.95. Both squads won their heats. The 4x400m time was faster than the season-best of 3:59.96 that Alcorn set during the indoor season.
 
Alcorn will be back at it next weekend when it competes at UL-Lafayette on Friday and Saturday. The 2017 SWAC Outdoor Championships is slated for May 5-7 in Huntsville, Alabama.
