Lady Braves to Host Eastern Kentucky, Travel to Mississippi College in Midweek Action

LORMAN, Miss. - After a nine-day layoff from competition, the Alcorn State University softball program will play in a doubleheader Tuesday against Eastern Kentucky University beginning at 11 a.m. at the Alcorn Softball Complex.

Alcorn (3-13) will then travel to Clinton to face the 2016 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) champion Mississippi College Lady Choctaws Wednesday in another twinbill at the MC Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT. 

The Voice of the Braves, Charles Edmond, will be on the play-by-play for both games.

After starting the season with three straight wins, the Lady Braves have dropped their last 13 contests, facing tough mid-majors Nicholls and Southern Miss in doubleheaders and No. 18 UL-Lafayette twice at the Ragin' Cajuns Classic. 

Junior catcher Jessica Crum hit a three-run homer in Alcorn's last contest against ULL. She leads the squad with a .475 batting average, 20 RBIs and four homers. 

Junior first baseman Taylor Hughes has reached base in seven consecutive games. She fronts the Southwestern Athletic Conference with 17 runs scored. Hughes' 23 hits this season also matches Jackson State's Denisha Knight for the SWAC's most. 

Alcorn is outscoring its opponents 14-6 in the seventh inning. The Lady Braves are 2-0 this season when holding opponents to two runs or less. 

EKU (7-14) dropped four of its last five games at the Ole Miss Classic, including two to Oklahoma State, and one each to Bowling Green and Ole Miss. Its lone win came in an 8-0 run-rule victory over JSU. First baseman Rachel Minogue spearheads the Colonels with a .492 batting average and 20 RBIs. 

MC (11-11, 5-6 GSC) splits its last two games against conference foe Union (Tenn.). The Lady Choctaws roster features four hitters with batting averages over .300 including Katherine Lee (.384), Tylan Buckley (.344), Haley Thompson (.338) and Carly Crawford (.322). 

MC ace Penny Nichols has started nine games this season with six of those being complete games.
