Lady Braves Complete Final Non-Conference Tune-Up at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – The Alcorn State University softball program dropped 6-1 and 8-2 decisions Wednesday evening to Mississippi College at the MC Softball Complex.

Game 1 – MC 6, Alcorn 1

The Lady Braves scratched their lone run in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded single from sophomore Kaylene Smith. Alcorn had seven student-athletes contribute one hit apiece.

Junior Madi Creed (1-4) tossed all six innings for her fourth complete game of the season. She allowed eight hits and six runs (all earned) on three walks and a strikeout.

MC starter Peyton Nichols improved to 7-5 as she twirled a complete game of her own, scattering seven hits and the aforementioned earned run.

Game 2 – MC 8, Alcorn 2

The Lady Braves (3-17) tied the game at one in the top of the second inning when senior Catherine Gore belted a solo homer to center field on the first pitch she saw.

Unfortunately, the Lady Choctaws (14-11) put up five runs in the bottom half to pull ahead 6-1.

Alcorn would answer in the next half-inning on an RBI single from junior Jessica Crum to make it 6-2.

However, the Lady Braves would be held in check for the next four innings as MC added two more runs in the sixth to seal the 8-2 victory.

Senior Jazmin Castillo (1-4) threw her second complete game of the season, striking out two and walking two during the 97-pitch outing.

Junior outfielder Mariah Ortiz extended her hitting- and reached-base streaks to six games as she notched a hit in the first game and two in the second. Two of her three hits were for extra bases.
